and i wanted to thank you for your comments on my blog (Nickel For a Thought).
it's actually challenging to find complex representations of black women in hollywood films. but i can name a few that i think have at least one complex black female character who does not conform to racist/sexist colonizing stereotypes of black womanhood: Love Jones, Love and Basketball, Eve's Bayou (very interesting black female characters in this film), Mixing Nia (very interesting biracial female character for sure), Bamboozled. Those are the only ones I can think of right off. You should check them out (any of them you haven't seen).
btw: very interesting website. i'm gonna link it on my blog.
Morroco or Algeria (the birth country of Rachid Taha and Dahmane Harrachi (the composer and first singer of ya Rayah) are Arab countries. What I mean by Arab is not a matter of ethnicity. We (I'm algerian descent) are African arab-berber. Same ethnicity but our culture is arabic. Sorry for this political post. I let uou some links hoping that forgive me
this is the original version of ya rayah (less dance more roots) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBM1r9HWWc0

You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoy the song. It would be nice to see more films with some Middle Eastern songs on the soundtrack.
ReplyDeleteBerneta, thanks for answering my question. I've seen all those films except Mixing Nia, so I'll have to check that one out.
That song was beautiful, thanks for coming by my blog!!! The Beautiful Brown Ones.
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear your thoughts on movies like Hero and House of Flying Daggers.
I'm really into martial arts movies.
House of Flying Daggers is visually stunning! And Yimou Zhang is my favorite director. So yeah, I enjoy martial arts films.
ReplyDeleteSolshine : Actually this song is north african not from middle east.
ReplyDeleteIt's an arab song but from north africa.
That makes sense, the director is Moroccan. There's a good portion of Arabs in that country.
