Since most people can't name five female directors it's nice to see that Catherine Hardwicke's Twilight dominated the box office. Did you embrace the Twilight mania?

Rashida Jones To Co-Star In New NBC Sitcom

She was Karen on The Office and now Rashida Jones will be playing a nurse in an untitled Amy Poehler project. It looks like NBC is hoping that Poehler will have similar success as fellow SNL alumna Tina Fey. I'm just glad Jones is getting more roles.

Anyone else remember her from Freaks & Geeks?

An Invisible Sign of My Own

This film isn't coming out until next year but I can't wait to see Jessica Alba play a nerdy girl! Her recent string of films have been less then stellar and she needs a role that will charm us again. If only they would have focused The Eye on the life of a blind violinist instead of all that scary stuff it could have been great.

Here's the synopsis for An Invisible Sign of My Own:

"Math whiz Mona Gray has elected to systematically withdraw from life after a mysterious illness leaves her Dad all but a shell of his former self. When she gets a job as the math teacher at an elementary school, she discovers she has an unorthodox talent for teaching and finds herself thrust back into life again, with children to care for, a man to love, and a reason to live" (IMDB).

No matter what I'll always be a Jessica Alba fan because of Dark Angel (I own both seasons). She was the coolest genetically enhanced kick-butt super soldier. And this line will always be golden: "If I just had my ass handed to me by a size three, I'd be inclined to mind my own business."

Until then check out the novel the film is based on.

From the film Something New...

Remember the scene where Brian picks up Kenya and takes her on a ride in his jeep? This was the song that played:

Too cool.

This Revolution

This Revolution uses the backdrop of the 2004 Republican National Convention to enter the realm of activists and their anti-Bush protests. It has a heavy indie vibe which works well for everything except the ending (it's a little far-fetched). Rosario Dawson doesn't have a lot of screen time but her scenes are the most poignant.

Director/Writer: Stephen Marshall
Starring: Rosario Dawson and Nathan Crooker

The Tyra Show Asks 'What Are You?'

In non-film news, check out this episode of Tyra about being biracial, how they identify and how other people perceive them.

As a mixed person I can relate to being mistaken for another ethnicity but some of the views these women have are so skewed, it's sad.

There's a bit of everything on here: black, Latino, Asian, white and Arab.

What are your thoughts on all this?

Club Native

From the official website:
"On the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake, located just outside the city of Montreal, Canada, there are two firm but unspoken rules drummed into every member of the community: Do not marry a white person and do not have a child with a white person. The potential consequences of ignoring these rules-loss of membership on the reserve, for yourself and your child-are clear, and for those who incur them, devastating. Break the rules, and you also risk being perceived as having betrayed the Mohawk Nation by diluting the 'purity' of the bloodline.

Club Native is a candid and deeply moving look at the pain, confusion and frustration suffered by many First Nations people as they struggle for the most important right of all: the right to belong."

Gardens of the Night

This isn't a movie for the faint of heart. Gardens of the Night deals with a disturbing subject matter: kidnapping. But don't let its heavy nature scare you off because it seems like an engaging story about the bond between two people who love each other through the worst of times.

Slumdog Millionaire

This film has been getting a lot of buzz.

Slumdog Millionaire is being heralded as a heart-warming tale of a guy's grand act to show a girl how much he really loves her. It's a simple story but in the hands of Danny Boyle (Millions) I'm expecting a film full of triumphant charm. It hits select theaters Nov. 12th, 2008. So go check it out!

Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan

Heavy Metal in Baghdad

The title pretty much says it all. "In the late summer of 2006, in the middle of the insurgency, filmmakers Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi traveled to Baghdad to meet and interview the only heavy metal band in Iraq, Acrassicauda" (IMDb).

Watching the Detectives

I came across this movie while I was shopping at Target and it seemed odd enough to give it a try. Watching the Detectives is about a video store clerk who's in love with cult films and the woman who takes his passion to a new level. Because we're used to seeing Cillian Murphy play the eerie guy and Lucy Liu is famous for kicking butt, this movie takes them out of their element and that's part of what makes it work. It's not ground-breaking or anything but it's fun.

Paul Soter
