In Search of a Midnight Kiss

Because New Year's Eve is upon us this indie film seems timely. In Search of a Midnight Kiss is about two lonely people in Los Angeles looking for someone to share the night with.

Sister, Sister?

This is kind of random but I think Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) and Sydney Tamiia Poitier (Death Proof) would be a perfect match to play sisters in a movie.

Best of 2008...

Here are my picks on all things noteworthy.

Best Screenwriter:
Jenny Lumet for Rachel Getting Married - The script is fresh and original. The characters have authentic voices and the way it portrays the familial bond between sisters is splendid. Plus it gets big points for hipster-ish wedding scenes.

Best Movie: Slumdog Millionaire - If I had to recommend one movie it would be this one. Everything about it is full of charm and good storytelling. If you haven't seen it yet, hurry up and go.

Best Year: Taraji P. Henson and Kate Winslet - It seems like Taraji came out of nowhere and now she's all over the place. She's in Tyler Perry movies, Brad Pitt movies and TV shows with William Shatner. Umm, whoa. Next up she'll be starring in a love story with Morris Chesnut. Oh yeah, it's definitely been a good year for her. Then there's Kate Winslet, actress extraordinaire. She has two solid films in her arsenal, will this be the year that Kate finally gets that Oscar win?

Best Newcomer: Freida Pinto - Something tells me that Pinto's short but pleasant performance in Slumdog Millionaire has some Hollywood execs sending scripts her way.

Best Director: Christopher Nolan for The Dark Knight - What Nolan did with this film is brilliant. It's the epitome of a summer blockbuster.

Breakout Performance: Dev Patel in Slumdog Millionaire - Patel was the anchor in this amazing little film about one boy's journey for love. I can't wait to see him a movie with his British accent.

Best Onscreen Chemistry: Will Smith and Rosario Dawson in Seven Pounds - It's about time Rosario did a love story, I just wish there was less rest of the story and more scenes with Will and Rosario. The film was at its best when the story was focused on them.

Best TV Show: The Office - watching Dwight sell unicorn Barbie dolls is way too funny.

Best TV Character (Male): Zachary Levi in Chuck

Best TV Character (Female): Mary McCormack in In Plain Sight

Best Soundtracks:

1. "This is Home" by Switchfoot (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian)
2. "The Call" by Regina Spektor (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian)
3. "A Night to Remember" by HSM cast (High School Musical 3)

Best Album:
She & Him - Volume One

Best Solo Artist: Leona Lewis

Best Music Video: "Drive My Soul" by Lights

Best Podcast: Mixed Chicks Chat

Best Video Blog: EpicFu.com

Best Trend: Keffiyeh scarves

Best Book: Only Uni by Camy Tang

These Girls (El-Banate Dol)

Anyone happen to catch this when it was at the Cannes Film Fest?

"[El-Banate dol] follows a band of teenage girls living on the streets of Cairo. Already at a disadvantage as impoverished and abused girls in a Muslim society, they encounter rape, drug addiction, prostitution, pregnancy and motherhood on the streets."

The Motel

I caught the end of this film on the Sundance Channel and what I saw was rather engaging. Now I want to see how it all started.

"Thirteen-year-old Ernest Chin lives and works at a sleazy hourly-rate motel on a strip of desolate suburban bi-way. Misunderstood by his family and blindly careening into puberty, Ernest befriends Sam Kim, a self-destructive yet charismatic Korean man who has checked in. Sam teaches the fatherless boy all the rites of manhood" (IMDb).

Starring: Jeffrey Chyau and Sung Kang
Soundtrack: "Oh My Dear (Falling in Love)" by Ween

DisFigured

Disfigured is the story about two women, Lydia and Darcy, who consider themselves fat but in different ways. Yet it is their newfound friendship that seems to shape them in the most unexpected way.

As spotlighted in the 2008 Women Film Critics Circle Awards.

Starring: Deidra Edwards and Staci Lawrence

A Very Merry Daughter of the Bride

You may remember Joanna Garcia from TV shows like Reba and this year's CW debut Privileged. I haven't watched the show yet but I've heard some good things about it. Plus it's one of the few shows starring a Latina. You can catch Garcia in the Lifetime original movie A Very Merry Daughter of the Bride on Saturday, Dec. 20th at 9 p.m.

"A wedding planner (Garcia) looks to persuade her mother not to marry a man she's only known for a brief period of time, until unexpected development forces her to re-examine her feelings" (IMDB).

Director: Leslie Hope
Writer: Scott Eastlick
Starring: Joanna Garcia and Luke Perry

Cole

If you're a sci-fi fan then you're probably familiar with Kandyse McClure who plays Lt. Anastasia Dualla on Battlestar Galactica. She's one of those under the radar actresses who could be great if she got some starring roles. Anyhow, Cole is her venture into the indie love story realm.

"Cole Chambers is a young man who dreams for something, anything beyond his monotonous life. When Cole gets the opportunity to take a creative writing class at a University in the city, he sees his potential for the first time - that he can get out of small town Lytton and actually make something out of his life. Cole spends increasing amounts of time away from home, falling in love with Serafina, a rich girl from his writing class."

This movie has no set release date but I can't wait to see McClure in this role.

The Bone Collector

Definitely one of my favorite Denzel movies. It's amazing how Denzel is able to command a scene even though he's paraplegic through the majority of the film. The Bone Collector is full of well crafted subtleties, especially the sparks between Denzel and Angelina Jolie. They gotta make another movie together! And to top it off the supporting cast gives some nice performances (Queen Latifah, Ed O'Neill and Luis Guzmán).

Snowglobe

Christina Milian stars in this cutesy ABC Family movie about a lady who will do anything for the perfect Christmas. It's a fun because of its simple yet enchanting feel that only Christmas films can conjure. Milian does a nice job of leading lady and I look forward to watching more of her films.

Director: Ron Lagomarsino

Irish Jam

Okay, so this movie isn't the finest example of whatever it's supposed to be. I caught it one afternoon on cable and it intrigued me enough to keep watching. I missed the beginning but gauging from the trailer that may have been a good thing (except for this song). The scene on the hillside had a sweetness to it, I just wish there were more moments like that. But if you're looking for an over-the-top film set in Ireland then Irish Jam might be for you.

Director: John Eyres
Starring: Eddie Griffin and Anna Friel

East is East

It starts off with the love story of a British woman and a Pakistani man set in Manchester, England. But the majority of the film centers around their family and how they blend in with both the British and Pakinstani communities. Be prepared for plenty of quirkiness.

Nothing Like The Holidays Premiere

Latino Hollywood was looking pretty snazzy at the premiere of Nothing Like The Holidays.

Jay Hernandez was looking hot as usual.

Freddy Rodriguez and John Leguizamo were having fun.

CSI: Miami's Adam Rodriguez was there.

And so was Pedro (Efren Ramirez).

Indie Spirit Awards: Jenny Lumet, Barry Jenkins and many more...

The nominees for the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards are out and Jenny Lumet's Rachel Getting Married is one of the leaders with a total of 6 nominations alongside Ballast and Frozen River.

The Spirit Awards showcase the type of character-driven dramas that I enjoy the most. I'm really hoping that Lumet snags a win à la Diablo Cody to ignite her Oscar bid. It would be pretty awesome to have back-to-back female screenwriter winners.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Barry Jenkins' Medicine for Melancholy in the mix. Other notables include: Haaz Sleiman (The Visitor), Summer Bishil (Towelhead), Rosie Perez (The Take), Penélope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) and Misty Upham (Frozen River).

Browse the nominee list and you'll find a bunch of a goodies.

Cute Family: Stacey Dash + Soldiers of Change

I stumbled across this photo...

Adorable.

Also, be sure to check out my favorite Stacey Dash film, The Painting (a.k.a. Soldiers of Change). It's her best role outside of Clueless.
