Trailer - Griff The Invisible

Australian writer/director Leon Ford's debut film stars Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) as Griff, a shy and awkward office worker by day, who finds escape from his ordinary life by assuming the identity of a fantastic superhero each night. Griff's secret is jeopardized when he meets Melody (Maeve Dermody). It looks like a really sweet film that combines two of my favorite things: superheroes and quirky indie romances. Can't wait to check it out. Now playing at the Nuart Theatre in LA!

Trailer - The Future

The second film from writer/director/artist Miranda July (Me and You and Everyone We Know) is about a couple who adopt a stray cat while going through a mid-life crisis. The trailer looks equal parts quirky and heartwarming. If you haven't seen her first film it's currently available on watch instantly. The Future will play at the Los Angeles Film Festival, which starts June 16th. Can't wait to see this!

Trailer - An Invisible Sign

Jessica Alba gets nerdy and awkward in An Invisible Sign. I've been waiting for a trailer to this movie since I first blogged about in 2008. Finally, the film has a release date courtesy of IFC Films. It's in theaters May 6th and currently On Demand via IFC.
Mona Gray is a 20-year-old loner who, as a child, turned to math for salvation after her father became ill. As an adult, Mona now teaches the subject and must help her students through their own crises.

One of the most buzzed about films at Sundance this year was the British film Submarine. It was written/directed by Richard Ayoade (Moss on The IT Crowd) and features new music by Alex Turner (from Arctic Monkeys). Awesome overload! Can't wait to check it out. Opens March 18th.

Jesse Eisenberg to Host SNL

Good news on the awkwardly cute front... Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) is set to host Saturday Night Live on January 29th.

Let's hope they include some Zombieland and Kristen Stewart references plus some Michael Cera comparisons. Should be fun!

Trailer - Happythankyoumoreplease

Written, directed, and starring Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother), Happythankyoumoreplease was the winner of the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. A trailer has been released and it looks like a fun quirky comedy with a great cast. It will be released March 4th.

Living 'til the End

Living 'til the End has its cute scenes including a noteworthy soundtrack pick with "Headlong" by Glen Hansard (The Frames, The Swell Season). Sometimes the movie struggles with odd shots where you can tell the director was trying a little too hard to achieve a style, but other than those distractions Living 'til the End is an enjoyable film. Sean Maher and Jaime Ray Newman make a nice pair as the quirky leads.

Told by a psychic of his imminent death on his next birthday, Jack lives out the year, as a hopeless agoraphobic, until he meets a young woman who slowly coaxes him out of his self imposed bondage.

Swedish Auto

Swedish Auto is a love story about two lonely stalker-type people starring Lukas Haas (Witness, Inception) and January Jones (Mad Men). The pace is slow but the small town setting and characters make it a worthwhile watch. It's cute in a sad mood-piece kind of way.

Available on Netflix.

Donald Glover as Spiderman #donald4spiderman

Since Reel Artsy is the unofficial headquarters for all things quirky and multicultural I just wanted to chime in that I approve the #donald4spiderman campaign that started on Twitter. Sci-fi blog io9 sparked the fire with their article "The Last Thing Spiderman Should Be Is Another White Guy" and the momentum picked up from there.

Donald tweeted "I don’t want to just be given the role. I want to be able to audition. I truly love Spider-Man."

Three Reasons Why Glover Should Be Considered for Spiderman:

 1. He's awkwardly cute. - Peter Parker is the geeky journalist who's cute in a nerdy way. Glover could totally nail that vibe. And he's already got the glasses.

2. He's on a hit TV show. - Community is one of the best comedies to hit the small screen and Glover is part the mix.

3. It's 2010! - Why not? Wouldn't it be cool to see Stan Lee standing next to Glover as Peter Parker in his usual cameo. Ch-ch-changes.

Easy A (teaser trailer)

Emma Stone plays a nerdy girl. That's enough to hook me. She did a great job in The House Bunny and this teaser trailer already offers some good laughs.
A clean-cut high school student relies on the school's rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing.

In theaters September 17th.

Splinterheads

You can add Thomas Middleditch to your list of awkwardly cute leading men. In Splinterheads he plays a guy looking for purpose and love (as most man-child characters do). In comes Rachael Taylor (the Austrailian computer nerd from Transformers) who plays a lady working at a traveling carnival. She has a crappy boyfriend, a crappy job but to keep her sanity goes geocaching. What is geocaching? It's kind of like a hipster scavenger hunt played with a bunch of random people across the country. The movie makes it look cool. Overall, Splinterheads is light-hearted comedy with a fun supporting cast, two likable leads and some delightful quirky moments.

Awkwardly Cute Awards - Web Series

Continuing with the Awkwardly Cute Awards, it's time to spotlight three web series that offered a good amount of quirky moments. All three series were created exclusively for the web, each ground-breaking in their own way.

Rockville CA
Music nerds.

For Deb and Hunter, their lives revolve around indie rock. They meet at a local venue (think LA's Spaceland) and banter over who knows more about "the scene." Excutive producer Josh Schwartz (The O.C., Gossip Girl, Chuck) wanted to showcase music in original way and instead of going the soundtrack route Rockville CA features live sets from real bands. Some notable performances include: Passion Pit, The Kooks, Lykke Li, Lights and Anya Karina.

The Lake
High school nerds.

Summer crushes, family drama and beach barbecues. Olivia is the new girl. Drew is the shy guy. And everyone on Lake Eleanor knows that should end up together except them. The series was directed by Jason Priestley (90210) and premiered last summer on TheWB.com. You can check out my interview the star Heather Ann Davis here.

The Guild
Computer nerds.

Felicia Day is the unofficial web series queen. She financed the first season of The Guild with support from fans, then later on secured a deal with with xBox and Microsoft. The award-winning show is about a group of online gamers whose lives are as offbeat as their online adventures.
