Thandie Newton on Being Biracial

The UK Daily Mail asked Thandie "How do you feel about being mixed-race?" Here's a snippet from her answer:

"My dad, Nick, an artist, is British, but my mum, Nyasha, is a princess of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe. In Britain she worked as a district nurse, but she retained that incredible African dignity and poise...

In some ways I'd say I come from Africa, but then I don't speak my mother's language, and in other ways I'm British through and through. I suppose I've never completely fitted in in either place."

She definitely fits in with amazing co-stars like Idris Elba and Gerard Butler. She did a fantastic job in Crash, The Pursuit of Happyness and from what everyone tells me Flirting. I also enjoyed her in The Truth About Charlie (I'm a big fan of the original Charade). Next up, she'll be in the apocalyptic sci-fi flick 2012.

  1. I first noticed her in Mission Impossible 2 because I didn't know who she was... then when I saw Beloved (again) it looked like her through all that hair! Now I know, she must have gotten that royal poise from her mother.

  2. I love Thandie Newton - she is gorgeous and just seems like a really sweet person. Oh yeah and an amazing actress - I like that answer about being bi-racial - never really fitting in anywhere. Halle Berry also has a lot to say about being bi-racial.

  4. I'm a big fan of the smoky eyes look with glossy natural lips. She does a super job of putting that together.

  5. I wonder if she considers herself to be black or not? Seems like more and more biracial people seem to be distancing themselves from their black half/heritage.

It was nice to see her on the ER finale.

  6. I'll be honest as the years go by, I'm not a big fan of Halle Berry, but I think she's gorgeous.

I would not put her in the same stratosphere as the lovely Thandie Newton. I appreciate Thandie's honesty, and how she spoke of her mother and father--her heritage, seemed more in the positive rather than negative. If I had an example for my daughter of a well-adjusted biracial woman in the spotlight, it would be her.

    She owns her Queendom.

  7. She is a great actress & that great that she embraces both of the cultures that make her Thandie Newton.

  8. 8thlight, I don't think biracial people in general are distancing themselves from one ethnicity but instead embracing all of their roots and/or multiculturalism. The two aren't mutually exclusive. But I can only speak for myself.

I understand what you mean, but I definitely don't seem to be running into that online or in my travels. There definitely seems to be a distancing in my opinion.

I just tend to see people talking about their non-black heritage and not really acknowledging their black heritage.

I guess there seem to be a rise of Jennifer Beals & a decline on Halle Berry(s). lol
