The new film from UK director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice) stars Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones, Atonement) as a 16-year-old killing machine! Ronan plays Hanna, who has been "raised from childhood to be the perfect assassin by her ex-CIA man father (Eric Bana) in rural Finland". Cate Blanchett plays "the ultimate target". Looks pretty badass. Also it was scored by The Chemical Brothers! Opens April 8th.

Director Catherine Hardwicke takes on the classic fairytale with Amanda Seyfried in the title role. While they are clearly marketing this to Twilight fans, there could be a good film underneath. I dig the dreamlike visuals and the appearance of the always entertaining Gary Oldman. Coming in March.

Altitude

Comic book writer/artist Kaare Andrews makes his directorial debut with the very Twilight-Zone-esque thriller Altitude. Five teenage friends rent a small plane for a weekend getaway but shortly into the flight, something suddenly goes wrong. The instruments begin to malfunction. The plane won’t stop climbing. A storm is closing in and fuel is running out. Now for everyone on board, the true horror has just begun: A mysterious force wants them all to die. The film is a great ride and I really enjoyed it. The claustrophobic setting is used extremely well and it's got some great effects for such a small movie. Throw in some unexpected twists and solid performances and it's a flight you won't wanna miss. The film premiered at Screamfest this week and Anchor Bay will release it on Blu-ray/DVD October 26th. Spoiler warning: I think the trailer gives away far too much so watch at your own risk.

Trailer - The Tempest

In her big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s mystical thriller, director Julie Taymor (Across The Universe, Frida, Titus) brings an original dynamic to the story by changing the gender of the sorcerer Prospero into the sorceress Prospera, portrayed by Helen Mirren. Prospera’s journey spirals through vengeance to forgiveness as she reigns over a magical island, cares for her young daughter, Miranda, and unleashes her powers against shipwrecked enemies in this exciting, masterly mix of romance, tragicomedy and the supernatural. The fantastic cast and Taymor's trademark visuals make this a must see for me.

Clint Eastwood's new film tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. Matt Damon stars as George, a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near–death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus, a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might exist in the hereafter. Eastwood is a great director and it was written by Oscar-nominated British writer Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen). Yes this looks promising. Shyamalan take notes. It will be released October 22nd.

Trailer - Black Swan

The trailer for the new Darren Aronofsky film starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis has arrived. Black Swan is a psychological thriller about a ballerina at a prominent dance company and her supposed rival in an eerie tale of mind over matter. I'm expecting a major plot twist or surprise ending but whatever the case the story looks intriguing and I'm looking forward to seeing Winona Ryder in a supporting role.

In theaters December 1st.

The Killer Inside Me

British director Michael Winterbottom’s (A Mighty Heart, 24 Hour Party People) adaptation of Jim Thompson’s novel has been garnering buzz since its polarizing festival reactions. The strong violence in the film was criticized and even caused some people to walk out. The trailer has now been released and it looks fantastic. It's well edited, creepy, and showcases the dreamlike cinematography. IFC bought the film and it will open in limited release on June 18.

Don McKay

Writer/director Jake Goldberger's debut film, stars Thomas Haden Church as a man who flees his hometown after a tragedy and returns 25 years later to attempt to rekindle his romance with an old high school girlfriend (Elisabeth Shue). It's nice to see Church play something other than his usual lovable slacker character and it also co-stars the great Melissa Leo.

Chloe

The new film by Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter, Adoration) stars Julianne Moore as an untrusting wife who attempts to prove that her husband is cheating by hiring an escort to seduce him. Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried co-star with a script by Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary, Fur). It is based on the French film Nathalie. Egoyan always manages to make complex, thought-provoking films and I look forward to seeing these three great actors clash together.
