Blood and Concrete (1991)

Blood and Concrete starts and ends on a zany note, but that's part of its appeal. The story takes place in a seedy version of Los Angeles where "the bad guys" ride around in convertibles and wear fannypacks. Billy Zane plays a car theft who wants out of his life of crime and Jennifer Beals plays a depressed woman who sings in an offbeat band. The two meet, awkwardly fall in love, and wild events ensue. If you're a fan of Quentin Tarantino's True Romance then you'll find Blood & Concrete an enjoyable companion film.

Reel Artsy Fashion

Hi there! Aspen of Bushy head and wide eyes here! It's been a little while since I've made a post here, so I hope everyone is doing well. Dress up is fun no matter which way you look at it. There isn't anything funner than just playing dress up sometimes, no matter what age you may be.

Trailer - Perfect Sense

Can't wait for the new film from British director David Mackenzie (Mister Foe, Young Adam). It's about two people who fall in love as an epidemic begins to rob people of their sensory perceptions. Interesting premise and the trailer looks fantastic.

Trailer - Everything Must Go

Will Ferrell stretches his dramatic chops in this indie comedy based on a Raymond Carver story. I loved Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction and I think he definitely has was it takes to branch out from his usual silliness. Opens May 13.

Music Spotlight - The Civil Wars

The Civil Wars is producing some of the best soul-stirring harmonies in the music scene. The duo, comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White, have found their "X-factor" and it's completely mesmerizing in a haunting yet beautiful way. Their track "Poison & Wine" best showcases their intensity, simple and heartfelt.

Trailer - An Invisible Sign

Jessica Alba gets nerdy and awkward in An Invisible Sign. I've been waiting for a trailer to this movie since I first blogged about in 2008. Finally, the film has a release date courtesy of IFC Films. It's in theaters May 6th and currently On Demand via IFC.
Mona Gray is a 20-year-old loner who, as a child, turned to math for salvation after her father became ill. As an adult, Mona now teaches the subject and must help her students through their own crises.

GUEST POST: 5 Favorites by Kandyse McClure

Kandyse McClure (Battlestar Galactica, Cole) stops by Reel Artsy to share -

Top 5 Things I love about South Africa:

Brimming with tales of adventure from my trip back last year, I was thrilled to receive the call to do a list of my favorite things. Here’s a little glimpse into a wild and wonderful place I like to call home.

1. Rainbow Nation.

People often think of South Africa in terms of Black and White and forget the myriad shades in between. There are 11 national languages in SA and a plethora of dialects. Africans from all over the continent live and do business in the blossoming economy, the strongest  and most stable in Africa. The birthplace of humanity welcomed all its children home at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It was thrilling  to hear so many different languages and cultures celebrating together in the streets of  Johannesburg. It’s not so much a melting pot as it is a tossed salad…

2. Lekker kos (Yummy food)

All that cultural diversity and international influence makes for some good eats. Of course there is the classic Braai (BBQ)  - meat marinated in sweet and spicy loveliness and grilled over a charcoal fire. Shisa Nyama!  I’m partial to stuff you can eat with your hands… After a night of dancing and carousing there’s nothing like a Bunny Chow. Hailing from my hometown, Durban, the bunny is one of the many delicious culinary contributions of the huge Indian community there: a hollowed-out loaf of bread  filled to overflowing with a delicious curry with a side of pickles for an extra bite. Best served with a Coco Cola and not for the faint of spice!

Netflix Pix: Funny Girls and Serious Boys

Kevin from Awkward is What We Aim For here.

It seems like Netflix Pix features come far too quickly every week--each time I'm done with one it's onto the other. It'll probably go every-other-week in Season Two so I won't feel so drained by it to the point where I miss deadlines by a mile. But I digress.

This week we have two vastly different movies, and that's where this series makes its bread and butter. We'll be taking a look at the film that earned Tommy Lee Jones his last Oscar nomination, In the Valley of Elah, a film I've always considered underrated. Then we'll look at Funny Girl, the Barbra Streisand-starring musical that made popular such anthems as "Funny Girl" and "Don't Rain On My Parade." The theme this week is weak (no pun intended), but it's essentially this: boys are serious and talk about war, girls are divas and sing about things. Sexism! Now available in fantastic films.
