Gugu Mbatha-Raw Returns to Romantic Role in Netflix's Easy

Anthology series Easy premieres on Netflix September 22. Joe Swanberg's first serial project chronicles citizens of Chicago in and out of love. The most exciting feature about the show is that Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as apart of an ensemble cast. Mbatha-Raw's last project was this year's Free State of Jones and this series is  drastically different from her role as slave Rachel. The starlet hasn't starred in a romance since 2014's Beyond the Lights.

This romantic comedy, that acts as stand alone yet intertwined "films", finds Gugu's character paired with quirky- indie-romcom heartthrob Jake Johnson. Johnson previously starred in Swanberg's Drinking Buddies. We can only pray the creator and director delivers similar magic with an independent feel, great chemistry between actors and compelling narratives that don't seem to complete themselves. Up and coming actresses Kiersey Clemmons (Dope)  and Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) also star.

Easy will surely give us some depictions of black love but to what extent is still to be determined. Tell us if you will be binging tomorrow or saving it for a rainy day in the comments.

Trailer - Seeking A Friend for the End of the World

Screenwriter Lorene Scafaria (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist) makes her directorial debut with this apocalyptic comedy. Set in a too-near future, the movie explores what people will do when humanity's last days are at hand. As the respective journeys of Dodge (Steve Carell) and his neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley) converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks brighten. It looks original, fun, and has a stellar supporting cast (Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, Gillian Jacobs, Melanie Lynskey, T.J. Miller, Patton Oswalt!). In theaters June 22.

Trailer - God Bless America

If you have always had an urge to punch reality TV brats and people who text in movies then writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait's new film is for you. I loved Goldthwait's last film (World's Greatest Dad, available now on watch instantly) and if you saw it you know what kind of dark twisted comedy to expect. Loveless, jobless and possibly terminally ill, Frank (Joel Murray) has had enough of the downward spiral of America. With nothing left to lose, Frank takes his gun and decides to off the stupidest, cruelest, and most repellent members of society with an unusual accomplice: 16-year-old Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement. God Bless America opens in theaters on May 11th, and will be available on VOD and digital platforms starting April 6th.

Trailer - The Descendants

The new film from writer/director Alexender Payne (Sideways, Election) stars George Clooney as an indifferent husband and father, who is forced to re-establish his relationship with his daughters after his wife suffers a boating accident. Trailer looks great, especially the running in flip-flops bit. Payne's films always manages to find the perfect balance between drama and comedy and I can't wait to see this. Coming this December.

From Emily Spivey (Parks and Recreation) and Lorne Michaels, comes Up All Night, a modern take on parenthood that shows the challenges of balancing a career, marriage and a new baby. Christina Applegate stars as Reagan, a successful public relations executive, and Will Arnett plays Chris, Reagan’s supportive, stay-at-home husband. The two have just become parents. Maya Rudolph stars as Ava, Reagan’s boss and best friend. It will air Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC.

Blood and Concrete (1991)

Blood and Concrete starts and ends on a zany note, but that's part of its appeal. The story takes place in a seedy version of Los Angeles where "the bad guys" ride around in convertibles and wear fannypacks. Billy Zane plays a car theft who wants out of his life of crime and Jennifer Beals plays a depressed woman who sings in an offbeat band. The two meet, awkwardly fall in love, and wild events ensue. If you're a fan of Quentin Tarantino's True Romance then you'll find Blood & Concrete an enjoyable companion film.

Trailer - Beginners

The new film from former music video director Mike Mills (Thumbsucker) premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. The movie is about Oliver (Ewan McGregor) who discovers that his elderly father has terminal cancer and is gay. Christopher Plummer plays Oliver’s father Hal, and Mélanie Laurent (Inglorious Basterds) plays a young French actress whom he develops a relationship with. I dug Thumbsucker and this looks fantastic. Mills certainly knows quirky (look a subtitled dog!) and hopefully there will be some substance to it as well. Opens on June 3rd.

Trailer - The Virginity Hit

While promoting The Other Guys at Comic-Con, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay also debuted an indie called The Virginity Hit, which they are producing through their company Gary Sanchez. It's a teen comedy done in the ever popular mockumentary format. It was written/directed by Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland, who also wrote the upcoming handheld horror movie The Last Exorcism. It screened to a very positive reaction (perfect crowd for it) and will be released September 10th.

Trailer - It's Kind Of A Funny Story

A trailer has been released for the third film from indie directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Sugar, Half Nelson). Adapted from Ned Vizzini’s 2006 novel of the same name, it stars Keir Gilchrist as Craig, a stressed teenager who checks himself into a mental health clinic. It co-stars the great Zach Galifianakis and has a solid supporting cast. I love Fleck/Boden's previous films and this looks fantastic. I also like the use of Ida Maria's 'Oh My God'. It opens on September 24th.

The Extra Man

Writer/directors Bob Pulchini & Shari Springer-Berman (American Splendor) have a new film starring Paul Dano as Louis Ives, a lonely dreamer who rents a room in the apartment of Henry Harrison (Kevin Kline), an eccentric playwright who is an 'extra man', a social escort for the wealthy widows of Manhattan high society. I will definitely be checking this out. Kline looks hilarious and I wanna know what's up with John C. Reilly's crazy beard character. It is currently available on demand and opens in theaters on July 30th.
